THE JOY OF YELLOW AND THE COLOUR YELLOW

MAY 2020

As we moved into May and for New Zealand our first day at level thee of our lock down, here are a few things that brought smiles and a touch of brightness to my days.

It was a bright cool morning as we stepped out for our morning walk. It was a such a surprise to see so many vehicles on the roads, such an unusual sound after five weeks of such stillness on our early morning walks. It took me a day or two to understand why there were so many cars that early in the morning; a jolly good few of them were dashing to buy fast food. It was more than nice to see more lights on in many windows and oh how great to see a young couple walking on the other side of the road drinking from “take away coffee cups”; a delightful Yellow moment and a feeling that every thing will be alright. That morning we had breakfast on the deck with yet more signs that life was getting on with it’s day. I have much appreciated the offers of picking up shopping for me. And friends phoning or messaging me on Face Book. It is a great way to keep in touch. Close to the end of the level three lock down we celebrated Mothering Sunday. So I decided to go out for morning tea with Jasper. Taking our usual careful social distancing we sat outside and completely on our own we enjoyed coffee and we had a yummy Anzac cookie as well. We sat outside and just watched the world go by. Jetcharm is a favourite place of ours and we had a great time. On the fifteenth of May we moved on to level two of the lock down with a feeling of excitement and interest in a new set of lock down rules. I was awake rather too early and as I waited for the jug to boil for a very early morning cuppa, I was delighted to see a hive of activity at Izzys food bar. I have missed seeing the lights on at their business. It was great to see them open later in the morning and slowly get busier as the days went by. What a joy our walk into town to return some library books was that morning. Retail windows were bright and welcoming with wonderful displays of late Autumn clothing, all kinds and newly arrived New Zealand made products. The whole morning seemed to sing with the joy of new beginnings. The one thing I missed the most of all was the Library at Puke Ariki and it opened with a flourish a week later. How exciting to be amongst all those books again looking for well loved authors or new books I had come across on the internet. I let the dust settle for a day or two before making my way there. I got a little bit fragile when I ran out of the books I had at home. But while looking for audio books to down load from the ever popular You tube site I came across some wonderful radio plays. You have to be in love with “old world charm” to really make the most of them. It was also a real delight to come across a whole series of Margery Allingham audio books about Albert Campion, a very English private detective whose stories I just love. We have had great weather through out May; we have been able to enjoy breakfast on the deck nearly every morning, once or twice with a thick rug over my knees and a hot water bottle at my back and of course dearest Jasper in his light but warm house coat. Just a little over two weeks later we moved onto level two, and the change has been rather dramatic, so many cars back on the roads. Some going a little too fast for my liking, rather like making up for lost time. But I do hope things have changed and that people will slow down a little and take time to stop and see the wonder of the world around them.
